When To Take Whey Protein For The Best Results

,
Paleo Drinks :

What Are The Best Times To Take Whey Protein To Really Pack On The Muscle?

When To Take Whey Protein For The Best Results

When it comes to taking whey protein, it makes sense to try and consume the whey protein supplement for the best results. If an aspiring weight trainer is just starting out and looking to supplement their diet with a protein supplement, it can be very confusing as to when to take whey protein for best the results.

Let me give you a personal example. When I first started weight training, way back in '86, my first protein supplement was Beverly International's protein powder. Of course, this protein supplement was not a whey based product but a cheap variation of soy protein mixed with milk proteins.

I'll be the first to say that these early protein powders mixed like cement and tasted slightly better. Anyways, I had no clue when to take this protein supplement. I basically took this protein powder once every two days. This was a complete waste of money with no benefit whatsoever.

First of all, my protein intake was very inconsistent which is not conducive to building muscle at all.

Secondly, every two days was not enough to affect my protein intake at all.

How was I supposed to know when to take a protein supplement? There was absolutely no information - No forums, no blogs, no Yahoo answers, no information sites (such as building muscle101..hehe), no internet, no nothing. If you were an aspiring weight trainer back in the mid '80's, there was not a whole lot of information to be found, let alone use.

Anyways, now I know.

Whey protein is a wonderful supplement since it contains some great muscle building properties that has one important element that most other protein sources don't have.

That is it's digestibility rate. Whey protein isolate for example (the purest form of whey protein), is one of the fastest acting protein sources today.

Once ingested, whey protein isolate can be in your system shortly thereafter.

As well as being one of the fastest acting proteins, whey protein isolate is rich in Branched Chain Amino Acids (leucine, isoleucine, and valine).

These amino acids are very important since they help prevent muscle protein breakdown during exercise and appear to preserve muscle stores of glycogen. In other words, whey protein isolate contains the muscle building properties that most weight trainers are looking for. This is very important to understand.

So, let's get back to the question: when to take whey protein?

Alright, so now you know that whey protein is 1) easily and efficiently digested, and 2) high in muscle building branched chain amino acids. All we need to know now, is when to take whey protein for the best results.

I've done some research and done a lot of personal experiments to see what works best. I've come to the conclusion that there are 3 windows of opportunity to put the power of whey protein to it's best use. Here is what I think are the best times to take whey protein:

o As soon as you wake up;

o 40 minutes prior to working out;

o Immediately after working out.

Let's take a closer look at each point for the best times to take whey protein.

1) As Soon As You Wake Up

"Get Your Body Ready For Growth!"

Upon wakening, your body is pretty much in a starvation mode. Whether you realize it or not, your body is craving for nutrients and needs these nutrients in order to kick start it's internal mechanisms to start building and working. Your body is weak and wants protein. The sooner you can get some protein into your body, the better.

Personally, I've found that a whey protein isolate drink mixed with some yogurt and orange juice works best. This is one of the more important times of when to take whey protein.

Now this is very important and one that can really boost your weight training results, OVERNIGHT! Approximately 45 minutes after you've consumed your whey protein shake, you must have a full, muscle building breakfast. By doing this, you are jump starting your bodies ability to use the protein effectively and efficiently. Believe me, if you can follow this one little tip, you will soon see your results skyrocket.

2) 40 Minutes Prior To Working Out

"Supercharge Your Workouts!"

If you have some pretty intense workouts, your going to stock up on some fast acting, high quality proteins. Whey protein contains high levels of branched amino acids which help preserve muscle stores of glycogen. This is very, very important. Since glucose is the bodies number one energy source, high muscle stores of glucose ensure high, intense workouts.

I would recommend you ingest a whey protein isolate drink mixed with some carbohydrates to supercharge your workouts.

3) Immediately After Working Out

"The REAL Secret To Building Huge Muscles!

In terms of when to take whey protein, this is the most important time to take in a fast acting protein drink. If you were to only have one protein drink per day, this is the time of day to take it. I'm going to very honest here, by simply taking a protein/carb drink right after after your workouts, you will improve your results immediately.

I strongly suggest that after your workouts, you ingest a fast acting protein source such as whey protein isolate and some fast acting carbohydrates.

Why carbohydrates and protein? When carbohydrates is taken with protein, there's a blast of insulin. Insulin kicks the body's glycogen making machine into high gear. Glycogen is considered the principal storage form of glucose and is found mainly in liver and muscle. Glucose supplies the bodies active tissues with energy.

Therefore, insulin will speed up the movement of glucose and amino acids into cells which is what you definitely want and secondly, it activates a special enzyme which is essential for glycogen synthesis.

Additional research has shown that ingesting a protein/carbohydrate supplement after exercise triggers the release of growth hormone. Great news for building muscle.

If you want to build muscle, always consume a power drink that is rich in whey protein and carbohydrates after your workout and include it in your weight training diet.

Try using the following drink for your post workout meal.

½ cup low fat yogurt

1 scoop(2oz) vanilla whey protein powder- 30 grams protein

1 tbsp honey

1 ½ cup low fat or 1% milk

1 cup orange juice

5 grams creatine monohydrate

Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Includes: 590 calories, 45 grams of protein, 93 grams of carbohydrates, and 6 grams of fat.

Remember to adjust the ingredients to match that of your own nutritional needs. Now, like your breakfast, you will need to follow this up with a full muscle building meal approximately 1 hour later. I am very serious here, because if there is one element that will put you on the track to fast muscle growth, this is it. Have the above noted drink immediately after your workout, no later than 30 minutes and you MUST follow this up with a full muscle building meal 1 hour later.

There you have it. If you can manage to follow the above noted schedule, I'm 100% positive that your gains will improve almost immediately.

How Much Sugar Per Day is Too Much?

,
Paleo Drinks :

While added sugar isn't the only thing to blame for our ballooning waistlines and less healthy status, a recent estimate has Americans taking in a whopping 22 teaspoons of sugar each day, most of this from regular soda and sweets. So, how much sugar per day is recommended?

How Much Sugar Per Day is Too Much?

Imagine eating an extra full size candy bar and drinking two cans of soda - 355 calories in all - every day.

Sugar consumption in this country is up 19% since 1970, now reaching levels that are a whole lot higher than they should be according to the August 2009 scientific statement out of the American Heart Association.

Added sugars are used in the processing or preparation foods, and do not include the natural sugars in items like fruit, dairy or vegetables.

It's the added sugar from foods like cookies, candy, cakes, pies, sweet rolls, cinnamon and worst of all, regular soda and fruity drinks that has experts so worried.

Soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages are the number one source of added sugar in our diet - A 12-ounce can of soda has a huge 8 teaspoons of sugar, about 130 calories.

While always urging moderation in added sugar intake, this time the American Heart Association took things a step further and suggests a specific upper limit on sugar intake.

According to the latest recommendations, a woman's added sugar intake shouldn't be more than 6 teaspoons a day (100 calories); for men the number jumps to 9 teaspoons (150 calories) per day.

As much as possible, added sugars should be no more than half your discretionary calories - In other words, eaten sparingly.

Of course knowing how much sugar you should be eating, and doing just that are two different things.

Experts realize this and know cutting added sugar isn't easy - But it is possible, not to mention good for your body. "Take a good hard look at your diet," advises study lead author Rachel K. Johnson, professor of nutrition at the University of Vermont in Burlington. "Figure out where the sources of added sugars are and think about how to cut back on that."

Some examples to give you an idea of the amount of added sugars in foods:

- 8 ounces of fruit-flavored yogurt has about 6 teaspoons of added sugar

- 8 ounces of low-fat chocolate milk has about 4 teaspoons

- a cup of frosted whole grain cereal has about 3 teaspoons

And while we expect added sugar to be in sweets and regular sodas and juices, it can be hard to figure out just how much sugar you're taking in from other foods, especially since the government doesn't require that labels show the difference between artificial and natural sugars.

You can check many foods for yourself by going to the U.S. Department of Agriculture database where you'll find listings for over 2,000 common foods.

Once you start looking, you'll be amazed at how many foods (and drinks) have added sugar. Read labels and you'll find sugars like brown sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, glucose, fructose, dextrose, sucrose, lactose, maltose, molasses, concentrated fruit juice, honey or evaporated cane juice, usually as one of the first four ingredients listed.

By limiting your intake of these ingredients you'll cut the number of total calories you take in each day.

Another thing you'll want to look at is how many calories you drink each day. Those rich coffee drinks or soothing smoothies add up, and faster than you think.

Keep track of the number of these drinks you have each day and you'll be startled by the amount of liquid calories you're taking into your body.

What's worse, by drinking your calories you don't get the chance to fill up, and are likely to eat and drink more than you need to, and therefore have a greater risk of gaining weight.

If you find you really and truly can't live without some of these sugary foods in your life, even though you are aware how much sugar per day you may eat by being watchful of your diet, then what you should be doing instead, is to get up and get moving.

To see how this helps - A man in his 20s who walks more than 3 miles a day can burn off the equivalent of 288 calories (about 18 teaspoons) of added sugar.

A Guide to Fruits that Increase Testosterone

,
Paleo Drinks :

Diet and Testosterone....

A Guide to Fruits that Increase Testosterone

Are you searching for ways to boost your testosterone levels naturally? Have you looked at your diet?

The following is a collection of tips from doctors, scientists and fitness experts about a healthy diet for optimum testosterone production, including lots of foods and even fruits that increase testosterone production.

Testosterone is produced by the body and is not found in the food we eat; however, certain foods lead to testosterone production and better blood circulation, which carries the testosterone to the appropriate organ, while other foods should be avoided.

So foods that encourage testosterone production may be called -- for lack of a better term -- testosterone food sources.

Testosterone Food Sources

Include:

Zinc: The best source of dietary zinc is meat. The best meat choice is the white meat of chicken. The best fish choice is salmon. For vegetarians, choose peanuts or beans. No fruits that increase testosterone in this category, because plant sources of zinc are harder for the body to use and are not good testosterone food sources.

Vitamin A: essential for the normal function of the reproductive organs. Lots of fruits that increase testosterone in this category: apples, blueberries, cantaloupe, pineapple and citrus fruits, just to name a few. Other food sources of Vitamin A include fish (salmon, again), leafy greens (spinach) and brightly colored vegetables like tomatoes, red peppers and yellow squash.

Hope you like salmon, because other than being an excellent source of Vitamin A and zinc, as well as protein, fish oil is said to keep SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) levels lower. When testosterone runs into SHBG in the blood stream, it becomes attached to it, and then can't interact with any of the body's cells.

The net effect of testosterone that is attached to SHBG is the same as a lack of testosterone since it is prevented from having any impact on the body. Salmon might be your number one testosterone food source followed closely by oysters which are naturally rich in zinc.

Diet and Testosterone

Avoid:

The following foods are not testosterone friendly food and drink sources: fried foods, sugar and caffeine over stimulate the adrenals, which produce some testosterone. Over stimulating the adrenals leads to "adrenal exhaustion", means they are not going to produce testosterone or anything else.

So a breakfast of hash browns, toast with jelly and coffee with cream and sugar would have pretty much everything in it that you want to AVOID if you are looking for testosterone food sources.

In conclusion, a healthy diet and testosterone production go hand in hand.

It is not possible to include here all of the good testosterone food sources or even all of the fruits that increase testosterone.

Consult a nutritionist or dietician for a personal plan that addresses your individual needs.

In the meantime, for breakfast tomorrow have an egg omelet (egg yolk contains cholesterol which testosterone is made from) with tomatoes and red peppers (sources of Vitamin A) and orange juice to drink. Follow that up with some alfalfa-sprout toast (alfalfa is said to be a sexual stimulant) and some fresh apples, pineapples or other fruits that increase testosterone and you are sure to have a good start to your day.

How to Use Flax Seed

,
Paleo Drinks :

You can eat whole flax seeds but you need to chew them good to break them up. Your stomach will not dissolve whole flax seeds and many of them will come out in your stools. Chew about a tablespoon in the morning. Then drink 8 oz of water. Make sure if you chew flax seeds that you drink water since the seeds expand and become gelatinous.

How to Use Flax Seed

There are brown and golden colored flax seeds. The golden cost more but there is not difference in their nutritional value.

You can grind them up in a grinder and add them to your smoothies. It is best not to use them in any cooking recipes. Heat destroys the value of the flax oil and makes it toxic.

I don't recommend you buy ground up flax seeds as found on websites or in health food stores. Once you grind your flax seeds, you need to use them in your drinks or food soon after grinding so they don't lose their nutritive value.

Even though Nutri Flax, ground up flax seed, is packaged so the flax seeds don't see light or oxygen, what happens when you open the package? These flax seeds are going to be exposed to oxygen and light and as time passes they will become oxidized.

It only takes 10 to 15 minutes in light and oxygen for the ground up flax seeds to become oxidized and lose it nutritive value.

So if you decided to use pre-grounded flax seed like it Nutri Flax, store it in your refrigerator immediately after it is opened and used to minimize its oxidation.

Flax seeds are composed of,

· 41% fat - fifty seven % is omega 3
· 18 % is monounsaturated
· 16% is omega 6
· 9% is saturated
· 20% is protein
· 7% is moisture

Daily requirements of the essential fatty acids

Daily most people require up to 3-6 grams of linoleic - omega-6 fatty acid
And 1.5-3 grams of linolenic - omega-3 fatty acid

For treatment of specific diseases, increase amounts of these fatty acids are required. The actual amounts will depend on the type of illness, the health of the individual, and the diet that they eat. A guideline to the amount needed is,

. Linoleic - omega-6 (9-30 grams per day)
. Linolenic - omega-3 (6 grams per day)

Sinuses - Despite Some Debate As to It's Impact, What We Eat Does Matter

,
Paleo Drinks :

To what extent the food we eat affects our sinuses has been an ongoing debate for sometime. But rather than getting involved into the theoretical, allow me to tell you about my experience, which probably is not unique. Other people I have known with sinus pressure and related problems seem to agree with the basic conclusion I have arrived at. This is based on several years of observing the effect that food has had on my sinus.

Sinuses - Despite Some Debate As to It's Impact, What We Eat Does Matter

There is an awareness, like never before, of the importance that nutrition plays in a person's health. What someone wrote many years ago that "we are what we eat" seems to be gaining relevance as nutritional research probes deeper into the correlation between health and the food we eat. Manufacturers of foods are very conscious of this awareness by the way they label their products. Foods containing low or unsaturated fat, natural ingredients, low or no sugar added, low cholesterol, etc., are conspicuously labeled this way.

It should not come as a surprise to many if I were to tell you that what I eat does affect the condition of my sinuses. Let me be blunt: If I want to have a sinus headache and/or post nasal drip (PND) I can have one anytime I so desire. All I have to do is have some foods and that's it !

Research has shown again and again the correlation between a diet containing certain foods and the incidence of certain other health problems such as heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, cancer, etc. This relationship is accepted by almost everyone. And the reverse is also becoming common knowledge, too: The lack of certain nutritional elements can also bring about unwanted health results. And so with sinus health. I believe that wrong eating has more to do with sinus pressure and other sinus ailments than many would had imagined.

Without meaning to get religious, it is interesting to note that modern nutritional research science seems to corroborate what the Bible Book of Genesis states about the original diet our Maker gave humankind--which some would say is still the best for us: Grains, fruits, nuts and vegetables(Genesis Chapter 1, verse 11; Chapter 2, verse 9; and Chapter 3, verse 18.) Research has also shown that when one adheres to a diet that contains primarily these natural foods a person lives longer and is healthier (e.g., Loma Linda University-Adventist Health Studies Number 1 and 2; 1974-1988; 2002 - present, respectively.)

In conclusion, those of us who suffer or have suffered from sinus pressure and other related sinus ailments would do well to consider the impact of certain foods on our sinus conditions . Plain common sense tell some of us to avoid them as much as possible. If we want the joy of having clear sinuses, freedom from PND, no more sinus headaches, etc., re-considering what we eat is a step in the right direction.

Main Facts About The Paleo Diet

,
Paleo Drinks :

The most important paleo diet information you ever need to know is foods containing preservatives are vetoed. This diet of many names - hunter-gatherer, stone age, caveman, paleo centers on foods that were eaten in the Paleolithic era. In essence, the modern dieter models the caveman's diet, as closely as possible.

Main Facts About The Paleo Diet

Researchers have long sought answers to questions about typical paleolithic menus, by intensive studies of paintings found in caves, fossilized food remains, cooking artifacts and hunting implements. They have also analyzed bones and teeth of early humans. It is conservatively estimated that cavemen ate about three times more fruits and vegetables and much more meat and fish than modern people. Our ancestors ate more greens and fewer grains than we do today.

Paleo diet information was conceived, based on the theory that humans would be freer of disease, by eating in the manner our bodies were designed to eat, prior to the beginning of agriculture.

Caveman Food

It is reasonable to suspect that our cavemen ancestors lived with a constant fear of where their next meal would come from. The only sustenance available was wild animals, fish and whatever edible weeds or berries they could forage.

It's not reasonable to expect modern people to eat precisely as people did in the paleolithic era without starting the diet by first making small changes to their eating habits in order to adjust to the new regimen.

When possible, eating wild meat, such as deer, alligator or bear is suggested. The second best alternative is to seek "free range" meat. When cattle, buffalo or chickens are allowed to roam and eat from nature's bounty, their richer meat contains valuable omega 3 fatty acids.

Using soup stock starter made from bones is a good choice. Stock is high in protein and minerals. Salads are on the acceptable food list also.

Tuna, salmon, trout and shellfish should be eaten frequently. Fruits such as avocado, bananas, figs or plums may be consumed in abundance. Vegetables are highly encouraged, as are nuts, with exception to peanuts, which are categorized legumes. Some recommended oils are olive, coconut and flaxseed.

Modern Foods to Eliminate

Up to this point, the steak-and-potato eater is happy. However, potatoes aren't allowed on the plan. In fact, all starchy foods are a definite "no-no."

Dairy foods in the form of butter, cheese, cottage cheese, milk and so on are forbidden. Grains must be eliminated - no cereals, oats, rice or barley - including white flour. Forget that comfort food, all-day beans, as all legumes must be eliminated. Chocolate lovers please note that the only permissible sweet is honey.

Water is the liquid mainstay. Coconut water may be consumed sparingly. No sodas, no diet or carbonated drinks allowed. Fresh herbs may be used as seasoning agents, but no salt is allowed.

Paleo Diet Information

The above overview should help you make an informed decision about whether or not the paleolithic way fits your needs and lifestyle. Proponents of the plan believe it a good lifetime way of eating to sustain healthy weight and fight disease.

The focus is on foods, which are considered comparative quality, to those consumed by the caveman. It is believed that our bodies do not correctly absorb whole grains, legumes or dairy.

Experienced people on the diet have observed such mild symptoms of headaches and fatigue in the beginning, but contend they resolve quickly in a couple of days.

Paleo Foods

,
Paleo Drinks :

For some individuals, it is tough to follow strict diet plans and maintain a picture perfect shape and for others, it is like their livelihood is at risk when they are out of shape. For conditions like these, we need to undergo a strict and proper diet.

Paleo Foods

In 1975, Gastroenterologist Walter L. Voegtlin suggested a diet similar to the Paleolithic era, saying that this would help improve a person's health. Sooner they called this diet as the caveman diet or commonly known as The Paleo Diet.

The Paleo Diet includes natural food items that will help you in obtaining a good, healthy and a desirable physique. Eating lean meat, seafood, and fresh vegetables could guarantee the best possible health. The Paleo Diet ensures that you can be at the finest of your shape if you know what to eat and plan your meals efficiently.

Our body's requirement of carbohydrate intake will be fulfilled with fresh vegetables and fruits. With the Paleo Diet, you will eat fewer carbohydrates but this will not decrease the energy levels, in fact it will balance them.

Things worth remembering on Paleo Diet:

Eat plenty of products, especially veggies.

• About 10 to 12 percent per day like the size of salad during lunch. Study shows that ¼ of individuals who eat the biggest quantity of produce have approximately ½ of cancer growth rate as those ¼ of individuals who eat the smallest quantity of produce. Generally, an individual can decrease the risk of cancer by 50% simply by eating veggies and some fruit, in relatively controlled manner.
• Raw veggies if tossed such as salads can be digested more readily.
• Do not replace veggies with starch such as bread, rice, pasta, and potatoes.
• Veggies are suggested to be eaten in the cooked form, with raw foods as a condiment for the most component.
• Veggies are best eaten as soon as possible after picking.
• Fruits are also taken into consideration, eat limited amount of sweet fruits.

The regular range of glycemic sets 100 as breads (white). It is finest for meals taken to be as low as possible on its glycemic range. Simple carbs such as sweets, dry fruit, and fruit juice are about 140 on the glycemic range. Whole grains are a bit reduced than 100, dropping in the low to mid 90s. Potatoes are a bit over 100. Basmati grain is lesser. Starchy veggies that are not high in sugar are lower, such as winter weather squashes in the year 50s and 60s.

Make best use of fats eaten.

• Consuming a lot of grain which fill in our body with omega 6 acids and this is no good.
• Approach the traditional diet instead of consuming factory-farmed meats and poultry.
• Take omega 3 supplements, you can get these from flax oil though not at its best.
Eat an amount of calories appropriate for level of activity.
• Avoid junk foods and carbohydrates.
• Get plenty of exercise.
• Drink adequate amount of water

Need to lose some weight quickly for an important event? Maybe a wedding, party, or "beach" day? In this article I'll show you some proven tips to lose up to 10 pounds in about a week. It's not always easy to lose weight fast but, with the healthy tips below, you should be able to lose at least ten lbs in the next 7 days...

Lose 10 Pounds in 1 Week - 8 Powerful, Proven Tips For Losing 10 Lbs in Just One Week!

1. Get focused. Write down your goal (e.g. "Lose 10 pounds in 7 days through strict diet and smart exercise"), read it several times per day, and focus all your energy on that goal. This is a proven form of "mental programming " and without this crucial step you will not be successful!

2. Do a quick detox. Do a 1 or 2 day detox diet. A simple option is a raw juice fast, but of course this requires a juicer. Another good option is a 1-2 day raw foods diet where you eat nothing but raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Either way be sure to drink lots of pure water and unsweetened herbal teas (up to a gallon per day for best results). By doing this you should lose a pound or two easily, cleanse your body, boost your energy levels, and get into the proper mindset for seriously fast weight loss results.

3. Start doing morning workouts. Every morning get up, put on some workout clothes, and go do a short 10-30 minute workout based around brisk cardiovascular/aerobic exercise. Speed walking or light jogging are ideal. This will help to jumpstart your metabolism and set you up mentally for the day ahead.

4. Eat a large protein-rich breakfast. Every day (except for your detox days) eat a large breakfast based around protein and good carbs (with some healthy fat for good measure). This will help to limit your appetite and make it easier to stick to a strict eating plan for the rest of the day.

5. Get on a paleo-style diet. The best diet to lose 10 pounds in one week is one based around natural, unprocessed foods that can be hunted or gathered in the wild. These foods, sometimes called "paleo" foods, mainly include: lean meats, eggs, fish, nuts, seeds, vegetables, and raw fruits. Your body is designed to thrive on these healthy foods and you'll be able to drop pounds more quickly and easily on this diet.

6. Cut the sugars and starches. I know it's not easy, but for the entire week you must cut out all simple sugars and starches from your diet. Definitely no refined sugars. No fruit juices. No honey. No grains (including breads, pastas, cereals, etc.). No potatoes. No rice. This simple step will cut your calorie intake while stabilizing your blood sugar levels and insulin production, making it a lot easier to burn fat and lose pounds quickly!

7. Snack often. Eat a small protein-rich and/or fiber-rich snack about every 2-3 hours during the day. Also have a piece of fresh fruit or some raw veggies about 10-20 minutes before your "big" meals. Snacking is one of the best strategies for controlling your appetite and avoiding food cravings that might derail your healthy weight loss progress.

8. Do full-body circuit training every other day. The best workouts for burning fat and losing 10 pounds fast are ones based around full-body circuit training. Basically you combine sets of simple strength exercises (e.g. pushups, bodyweight squats, pull-ups, etc.) with short rounds of higher-intensity cardio training. These workouts should be kept short (under 30 minutes) and intense in order to force your body to burn calories, drop extra fat quickly, build and tone lean muscle tissue, and allow you to get rid of that extra weight in the fastest way possible!
